We would like to inform you that the PhD Candidate of the Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design, Dimitris Oikonomou, will present a speech at the Universidad de Zaragoza, Spain, as a guest speaker, on Thursday 2/29. The speech will take place within the framework of the work of the research group SISEC (Sistemas SocioECológicos agrarios) at 16.00 Greek time. The topic of the speech is "Targeted grazing as a wildfire prevention tool in Greece: an ecological and social approach".

The term targeted grazing is used to describe the use of grazing to achieve specific goals in relation to the environment and landscape. This practice has an ecological and economic interest in reducing and dealing with the problem of forest fires in Greece, a problem that is common to the countries of the Mediterranean Basin. The case of Spain is particularly typical, being a country where the planned inclusion of livestock in fire prevention already has a rich historical precedent. The exchange of views and experiences between scientists from countries with common environmental problems is a springboard for the optimal use of targeted grazing in rangeland management and fire prevention. In this talk, in addition to the broader reference to the above topics, the current research in the Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design, which is being conducted in the form of a doctoral thesis, is going to be described.
