Dr. Petros Kakouros holds a degree in Forestry and Natural Environment from the Department of Forestry and Natural Environment of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1994) and a PhD in Ecology and Landscape Mapping from the same Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2008). He has 27 years of experience in monitoring, assessment and management/restoration of terrestrial habitat types. He was the project manager or had significant involvement in a number of related projects, such as the Restoration of juniper forests (priority habitat type* 9562) in Prespes National Park, Restoration of black pine forest (priority habitat type* 9530) in Parnonas, the preparation of the Management Plans for the Natura 2000 network sites of Cyprus; Paralimni Lake, Ha-Potami, Lympia-Agia Anna and Mitsero, the mapping of forest, wetland and grassland habitat types in the Riparian Forest of Nestos, etc.

He has also prepared Special Environmental Studies (SEIS) such as those for the Evrotas River Delta, Kato Olympus and has participated in the evaluation of SEIS and management plans of protected areas such as the Riparian Forest of Nestos. In total, he has participated in more than 35 monitoring, mapping, management and restoration projects of forest, grassland and wetland ecosystems, the majority of which have been funded by programs such as LIFE, Interreg, RDP, Horizon, EEA, etc. Since 2000, he has been working at the Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre as an expert in forest and wetland ecosystem management and restoration and since 2022 he the forest programs manager. In the context of the above activities he has presented papers in many conferences and meetings in Greece and abroad and has participated in the writing and/or editing of collective publications and conference proceedings and has published in scientific journals. He participates in international and national scientific networks and scientific societies dealing with forest and grassland ecosystems and nature conservation. He also teaches in postgraduate programs at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and in the Postgraduate Programme "Multifunctional Management of Natural Ecosystem and Bioeconomy" of the Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design of the School of Technology of the University of Thessaly.
