This lecture primarily concerns wood, as a building material, but also wooden constructions. The lecturer, after a brief introduction, tries to cover basic and special concepts related to this natural material and which should be understood by the new engineer - designer - researcher, so that it is possible to use wood correctly in applications and constructions. Additionally, elements related to the macroscopic, physical and micro-scopic characteristics of wood will be analyzed. Also, the concept of hazard rating for timber structures will be discussed and technical information that the new engineer should know about a timber or composite structure will be given. The use-classes of the main types of wood, which are directly related to its biological resistance, will be explained based on the EN 350 standard. In addition, the European EN standard will be briefly discussed 338 which concerns the grading of structural timber based on its mechanical strength. Finally, some maintenance techniques will be mentioned for the proper protection of wooden structures.
